Synopsis

Meet the Park family, the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim family, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide "indispensable" luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household. When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims' newfound comfort, a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks. By turns darkly hilarious and heart-wrenching, Parasite showcases a modern master at the top of his game.

In part a grifter-family comedy, in part an exposé of the Korean class structure, and in part, and finally, an unexpected thriller, Bong Joon-ho's film keeps these competing aspects beautifully in balance (and viewers off-balance). The impoverished Kim family--the father is played by Bong regular Song Kang-Ho- -recalls the family of rogues in Kore-eda's "Shoplifters." Surviving through odd jobs and petty larceny, they are a warmly affectionate group. The Parks, inhabiting a stylish mansion on spacious grounds, are solidly middle class, complacent in their well-endowed life and naïvely oblivious (especially the mother, beautifully played by Jo Yeo-jeong) to the precariousness of their charmed existence. The infiltration of the Kims into the Park household generates the kind of guilty pleasure offered up by a good caper comedy. We smile at the wiliness of these parasitic scam artists and wish them well. Then comes a surprise, the emergence of an additional parasite, and a bit of over-the-top violence. I've seen, I believe, all of Bong Joon-ho's feature films, many of them similarly genre-juggling, and have never been disappointed. This extraordinary film is perhaps the best of them all.

First half or so was slyly funny and seditious. And since I had just viewed a youtube documentary on the Korean personal debt crisis I had some idea what triggered some of the action. However, matters got out of hand with the discovery of the "guest" in the bunker. Subtlety gave wave to mayhem and gore, and I lost interest.
