After the accolades received by Parasite in 2020, be sure to watch (or re-watch) this superb film by master director Kore-eda, who handles similar themes with much greater subtlety, complexity, and insight. Where Parasite deliberately mixes genres, thwarts viewer expectations, and subordinates its characters for the sake of political and philosophical points, Shoplifters is steadfastly humanistic, connecting the viewer to the main characters and delivering a genuine, moving story.
