Synopsis

Argentine filmmaker Lucrecia Martel (La Cienaga, The Holy Girl) highlights and laughs at the pitfalls of bureaucracy in her surrealist portrait of low ranking Spanish officer Don Diego de Zama. I developed an empathy for Zama who awaits permission to be transferred out of a colonial outpost. His setbacks and Kafkaesque situations span time and place making Lucrecia Martel’s film universal.

In my opinion Zama didn't live up the hype it received. Languid. Message seemed to be that if snakes. bugs, disease or bandits don't get you, boredom will. Want to see some life in the Chaco, watch The mission.
