Synopsis

Cinema legend Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, American Gigolo) is back with his latest film about a reverend on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Ethan Hawke, in a career defining performance, plays Reverend Ernst Toller. After a troubling encounter with a radical environmental activist, Toller falls down a dark path. Having literally wrote the book on transcendental filmmaking, Schrader employs the familiar tactics of Bresson and Ozu in this look at the man-made horrors of the world.

I was blown away. First film I've seen that really cuts through the myths we tell ourselves, and gives expression to the contemporary American condition. Near-perfect film.

Deliberate and elliptical. Several minutes in I wondered if I were watching a reworking of Bresson's Diary of a country priest: tortured cleric dying of stomach cancer bucking powers that be who want to dictate what he can believe and preach, suspicious of counsel from practical older pastor who knows how the world operates and so on. (My suspicions were confirmed when I came across a rarely watched Youtube clip of Paul Schrader introducing a screening of Diary) Then the film stopped abruptly, as if they'd run out of film. Are we going to get a sequel? Second reformed? And the last time I heard Leaning on the everlasting arms in a movie it was sung by the villainous Robert Mitchum in Night of the hunter.
