Synopsis

In the future, searching for a way to solve overpopulation and global warming, a scientist invents "downsizing", a process to shrink people to a height of five inches. Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig play Paul and Audrey Safranek, a married couple in Omaha, Nebraska with financial problems, who agree to the procedure. Upon moving to the luxurious downsized community Leisureland, Paul finds that many of society's normal-sized problems remain in this science fiction comedy-drama by Alexander Payne (The Descendants, Nebraska). The premise sounds absurd at the outset: a scientific breakthrough allows a willing (in most cases) person to be miniaturized (maybe 3 or 5 inches tall), whereupon that person can live in cities made for and occupied by fellow Lilliputian people. People choose to do this for primarily economic reasons, as they can ultimately live far more cheaply as a tiny person than as a full-sized one. As with every Matt Damon movie I've seen, this one has a functional social conscience, well-exercised here. It won't insult your intelligence. Well recommended...
