Synopsis

Three generations of women with the same name have rid themselves of their unwanted husbands in the same manner--they drown them. The local coroner, Madgett, agrees to declare the deaths accidental in return for sexual favors. But when things don't go exactly as planned, he devises a final game that could result in the undoing of them all. Another romp through the gutter with writer/director Peter Greenaway (The Thief, The Cook, His Wife & Her Lover), characterized by the same sterile beauty that can be found in his other films. Peter Greenaway---Great Britain---1988---121 mins.

My tolerance level, at least for movie subject matter, is pretty broad. I actually thought that How tasty was my little Frenchman was almost idyllic. Ravenous and that film about the Donner Party were illustrations of the depths to which human beings could descend when faced by starvation..Ladru raised the question, was the bourgeois bluebeard going to get away with it? Diabolique kept me glued to my seat. I've sat through films about concentration camps, sadistic behavior, incest, you name it, without being completely turned off. But Drowning by numbers, in my estimation, went too far. Its premise is clever, the cinematography is terrific, the acting is uniformly good. Story is a bit fragmented at the beginning, but it becomes easier to follow as it goes along. But, I'm sorry: treating spousecide, it theri is such a word, as an extended joke, is not funny..
