Synopsis

One of the most successful Czech films of 2016, the true story of the beautiful Czech-Austrian actress Lida Baarova, who appeared in many films including Fellini's I Vitelloni

, and was for two years the mistress of Nazi propaganda minister of Germany, Joseph Goebbels. While working as a film actress in Berlin, Baarova met Goebbels, who was heavily involved in German film production. Their affair disrupted her career, led to banned films, a nervous breakdown, and relocation. (Which is how she ended up working with Fellini.) Ms. Baarova is portrayed by Czech actress Tatiana Pauhofova.

Missed opportunity. To begin with, some really hokey special effects start things off on the wrong foot. Ms. Pauhofa wanders through the film like a disinterested observer. As for Markovics,, he was magnificent as the amoral Sorowitz in Die Faelscher, but he bombs as Goebbels. Goebbels was a monster, but he knew how to strut, and he was an unparalleled orator. My old German teacher told her pupils that if they wanted to hear perfect German they should listen to Goebbels speak. Markovics's Goebbels is nothing more than a lounge lizard. Evidently this is the second try at putting Baarova's story on film. Let's hope, that is someone tries it again, he, or she, gets it right.
