Synopsis

A roving film projector repairman (Rüdiger Vogler) saves the life of a depressed psychologist (Hanns Zischler) who has driven his Volkswagen into a river, and they end up on the road together, traveling from one rural German movie theater to another. Along the way, the two men, each running from his past, bond over their shared loneliness. Kings of the Road, captured in gorgeous compositions by cinematographer Robby Müller and dedicated to Fritz Lang, is a love letter to the cinema, a moving and funny tale of male friendship, and a portrait of a country still haunted by war. Wim Wenders---1976---Germany---176 minutes

The Germans have a word for this, "langweilig"/ Like listening to a Philip Glass symphony. I kept dozing off.

Many seem to think this is Wenders' masterpiece, but his Alice in the Cities is a far better film. This one is too long, and too tedious---a long roadtrip that really never goes anywhere. The relationship between the two men never really develops, and a final physical dispute feels too little, too late. In fact, none of the characters in the movie are able to connect with each other, which maybe is Wenders' point about modern life, but it doesn't make for good drama. The only real startling moments are a few curious scenes of taboo film subjects--- one character defecates on a beach (you see it all), and another is caught masturbating (you see it all). Some have called this "honesty," but it comes off as gratuitous shock.
