Synopsis

The first of the road films that would come to define the career of Wim Wenders, the magnificent Alice in the Cities is an emotionally generous and luminously shot odyssey. A German journalist (Rüdiger Vogler) is driving across the United States to research an article; it’s a disappointing trip, in which he is unable to truly connect with what he sees. Things change, however, when he has no choice but to take a young girl named Alice (Yella Rottländer) with him on his return trip to Germany, after her mother (Lisa Kreuzer)—whom he has just met—leaves the child in his care. Though they initially find themselves at odds, the pair begin to form an unlikely friendship. Wim Wenders---1974---Germany---113 minutes

A beautiful little film, all the more remarkable for having been originally shot in 16mm. An early scene when the protagonist, a lonely German man trying to work as a journalist in America, smashes a TV set struck me as a bit ham-handed and I worried the whole film might be that way, too. But no, after he meets Alice, a nine-year-old Dutch girl, the film becomes touching and poignant. When Alice's mother abandons her to the care of the journalist, he tries to track down the girl's family, traveling with her first to Amsterdam, and then to Germany. The two develop a bond that's explored with great subtlety and great under-acting in a series of short scenes, accompanied by an occasional plaintive tune on the soundtrack. It left me quite stunned by the power of film.
