You asked me to rate Hail, Caesar! upon its return to you. I can't rate it because it arrived damaged and unplayable and I so reported. I don't know why you want my rating under these circumstances. Perhaps your computer system doesn't check to see if there was a damage report.

A satirical, but withal affectionate look at Hollywood during its so-called Golden Era, which in retrospect wasn't so golden after all, a Hollywood ruled by crass executives who peddled cynicism, hypocrisy and faded dreams. (I kept mentally comparing it with Singin' in the rain.) The Coen brothers spare no one. Even the sacred Hollywood Ten don't escape. Yet they never get nasty. The performers obviously had a ball making this film. And unlike some Coen Brothers films I have seen Hail Caesar doesn't go off the rails in the last ten minutes or employ all the cinematic devices the Coens may have learned in school. Have they learned how to restrain themselves? Unfortunately, I fear that a lot of the barbs will go over the heads of anyone under 70 who isn't a committed cinema buff.

I did not know that there where two sets of Coen Brothers. The other Coen Brothers must have produced this film.
