Synopsis

Inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers (Theodor Koch-Gr├╝nberg and Richard Evan Schultes), 'Embrace of the Serpent', is "a tragic cinematic elegy for vanquished indigenous civilizations in the Amazon Jungle." (Holden, New York Times) Filmed in stunning black-and-white, 'Embrace of the Serpent' centers on Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who, over the course of 40 years, build a friendship with him. Winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize, and nominated for a 2016 Foreign Language Film award, 'Embrace of the Serpent' is well worth the watch according to critics across the board. Sets a most unusual mood. Will be informative for those unfamiliar with the Amazon and the history of its indigenous people. Is accurate in many ways, particularly in the atmosphere it conveys and its portrayal of various sorts of individuals. (I have a strong background relating to this subject). There are relatively minor inaccuracies that I noticed, but lack of certain facts doesn't decrease the overall impact of the film. I believe everyone should see this film, both as a cinematic experience and to help fill the gap in awareness of these topics - which are continuing to have major impacts today.
