Synopsis

"At once blistering and poetic, the ravages of colonialism cast a dark shadow over the South American landscape in EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT, the third feature by Ciro Guerra. Filmed in stunning black-and-white, SERPENT centers on Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who, over the course of 40 years, build a friendship with him. The film was inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers (Theodor Koch-Grünberg and Richard Evans Schultes) who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of the sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant." (Oscilloscope Laboratories) Ciro Guerra---Columbia---2015---125 mins.

Sets a most unusual mood. Will be informative for those unfamiliar with the Amazon and the history of its indigenous people. Is accurate in many ways, particularly in the atmosphere it conveys and its portrayal of various sorts of individuals. (I have a strong background relating to this subject). There are relatively minor inaccuracies that I noticed, but lack of certain facts doesn't decrease the overall impact of the film. I believe everyone should see this film, both as a cinematic experience and to help fill the gap in awareness of these topics - which are continuing to have major impacts today.
