Synopsis

In January 2013, Laura Poitras started receiving anonymous encrypted e-mails from "CITIZENFOUR," who claimed to have evidence of illegal covert surveillance programs run by the NSA in collaboration with other intelligence agencies worldwide. Five months later, she and reporters Glenn Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill flew to Hong Kong for the first of many meetings with the man who turned out to be Edward Snowden. She brought her camera with her. The resulting film is history unfolding before our eyes.

"Citizenfour" is a remarkable film. Edward Snowden is truly courageous. Laura Poitras did an amazing job capturing Snowden's meeting with herself, Glenn Greenwald, and Ewen MacAskill in Hong Kong-- and his subsequent "escape" from Hong Kong. The NSA and GCHQ in the UK are "vacuuming" up an immense volume of phone calls, e-mails, and text messages. Snowden is no spy, but a man of true integrity who believes that citizens have the right to know what information their government is collecting. He saw what happened to whistleblowers Chelsea Manning, Bill Binney, Thomas Drake and others and knew he had to reach out directly to the American people. He chose two very fearless and competent journalists/filmmakers (Laura Poitras and Glenn Greenwald) as his vehicle for reaching the public. I highly recommend watching the "extras" disc in addition to the feature film.
