Synopsis

Badlands announced the arrival of a major talent: Terrence Malick (Days of Heaven). His impressionistic take on the notorious Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate killing spree of the late 1950s uses a serial-killer narrative as a springboard for an oblique teenage romance, lovingly and idiosyncratically enacted by Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now) and Sissy Spacek (Carrie). The film also introduced many of the elements that would earn Malick his passionate following: the enigmatic approach to narrative and character, the unusual use of voice-over, the juxtaposition of human violence with natural beauty, the poetic investigation of American dreams and nightmares. This debut has spawned countless imitations, but none have equaled its strange sublimity. Directed by Terrence Malik---USA---1973---94 mins

I vividly remember the murderous trek of Charlie Starkweather and Carole Rugate across the Great Plains. Would the young killers be caught? Would they get away? The nation held its breath. Comparisons of Badlands to Bonnie and Clyde are, in my opinion, off base. Granted, all four principals were tortured misfits, but Bonnie and Clyde had a purpose: "We rob banks". Starkweather and Fugate's surrogates only struck out in mindless rage. Not a pretty story, but Badlands perfectly recaptures the era and the mindset of a couple of doomed losers who had their "fifteen minutes of fame".

One of my favorite movies. The classic Bonnie& Clyde type movie. I loved how realistic the movie played out it wasn't too romantic or too rough around the edges. The settings, the costumes, even the color scheme was on point. Yes I rated it a 4 but it is a classic in it's own right I just felt that there could have been a better background of Martin Sheens character as well as more interaction scenes with the towns people. In regards to the adventure of being on the plains of Montana I can understand how boring that can be I wish there as a little more to the movie.
