Synopsis

In this innovative documentary about a true mother-daughter tragedy, the words of real people are read and mimed by actors filmed on location. Andrea Dunbar was a successful playwright who drew upon her disturbing past in a council slum in West Yorkshire to write unflinching plays. On her street “The Arbor,” she was introduced to too much drink and too many men. Though she became an unlikely literary star and had three daughters, Andrea died at the age of 29. In the aftermath, her oldest daughter, Lorraine, started heading down the very same path of self-destructive behavior. But Lorraine also began to channel her neglect into prose. This oddly fascinating film is based on their personal letters, interviews with family and friends, and a reading of Andrea’s most famous play, The Arbor.
