Synopsis

Six years before Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?, this independent British melodrama tackled issues of racism and interracial dating. A forward-thinking union leader (John Mills) wants to promote a Jamaican immigrant in his factory. Once installed, the working class Brits on the floor seem just fine with the progressive act. However, when Mills's daughter announces that she's marrying a black man, his tolerance comes to a screeching halt. Not only do tensions flair up within the family, but the whole neighborhood erupts in gang violence. It's teddy boys vs. West Indians, and there are flames in the streets (of Pinewood Studios).
