Synopsis

In this extraordinary film from Iranian writer-director Asghar Farhadi (Fireworks Wednesday), a happily-married husband and wife are headed for divorce. Simin (Leila Hatami) wants a better life for her daughter in another country, while Nader (Peyman Maadi) wants to stay in Tehran to care for his ailing father. When she leaves him, Nader, a middle-class banker, hires a day nurse to help deal with his father. But the poor young woman, Razieh (Sareh Bayat), is deeply religious and cannot bring herself to perform certain tasks for the old man. When Nader learns Razieh has left his father alone at a time of need, it leads to an altercation with dire consequences. The characters all follow Islam to varying degrees and have good reasons for their actions, but they do not possess enough information to understand one another. Farhadi's "only agenda seems to be to express empathy...To untangle right and wrong in this fascinating story is a moral challenge" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). Winner of three Bears at the Berlin Film Festival and nominated for Academy Awards for Nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Foreign Language Film. In Persian with English subtitles.

"Little man what now" meets the "Bickersons" writ large. All too familiar tug of war over who gets the kid in a divorce settlement. Set in Iran, but remove the head scarves and chadors and you could be in a suburban American courtroom. Constant nattering wore me down even if it didn't slow down the performers. Lack of resolution leaves viewer hanging. Not a pleasant film, but a worthwhile one.
