Synopsis

Louis Malle was never a filmmaker to stick with a style for long, but this post-apocalyptic fantasy might be the farthest branch from his New Wave roots. Shot by Sven Nykvist (Ingmar Bergman's longtime cinematographer), Black Moon is a symbolic, surreal film about a teenage girl, Lily (Cathryn Harrison), who wanders into a strange wonderland while trying to escape war. Here, children frolic naked, rats talk, eagles scream, and even the grass makes noise...under the feet of a unicorn...which exists. Lily takes refuge in the farmhouse of an old woman (Therese Giehse), her daughter (Alexandra Stewart) and son, (Joe Dallesandro, Flesh), who helps Lily come of age. "What it's about is a matter of conjecture. What it's not about is commercialism" (TV Guide). Winner of Cesar Awards for Cinematography and Sound. In English.
