Synopsis

Director Darren Aronofsky combines the gritty, documentary style of The Wrestler with the more precise production design of his earlier films like Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain; this is a perfect pairing for Black Swan, a sexy, tutu-ripping psychological thriller set in the very physical world of professional ballet. Natalie Portman plays an innocent young dancer who fixates on landing the lead role in Lincoln Center's Swan Lake. The director (Vincent Cassel) takes her under his wing, but at the expense of his former star ballerina/lover (Winona Ryder). As Portman struggles to perfect a part that demands both lightness and darkness, she becomes obsessed with another new ballerina (Mila Kunis) who is effortlessly brooding and sultry. The movie leaves open to interpretation whether Portman and Kunis are mere rivals, doppelgangers, or one fractured psyche. Someone has clearly been studying Bergman's Summer Interlude and Persona. With Barbara Hershey as a controlling stage mother, original music by Clint Mansell, and photography by Matthew Libatique.
