Synopsis

John Cameron Mitchell's third feature after Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus is this nuanced adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire's stage play. In it, Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart play a suburban couple grappling with the death of their four-year-old son. The shock subsides after eight months, but she keeps withdrawing from her husband and the world, while he will do anything to connect with her and salvage their marriage. Ironically, that means getting closer to another mourning mother (Sandra Oh) from his therapy group. Yes, this is a film about grief and two characters growing apart, but it's not cliched and it's not all doom and gloom. "Rabbit Hole is a technical challenge. It is simple enough to cover the events in the story, not so simple to modulate them for humor and even warmth" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). An Oscar Nominee for Best Actress.

I was worried about the potential sentimentality and soap-opera nature of the subject matter. And yes, it is sort of a soap opera but it avoids the worst traps of sentimentality and is truly moving at the end...despite the Hollywood conclusion...or perhaps because of it! Nicole Kidman is brilliant, with so many subtle variations in her tone of voice and facial expressions. Nothing is overdone, everything is spot on. And the rest of the cast is almost as good...even Dianne Wiest, whom I usually don't like (her sugar-sweet smile irks me no end). So different from John Cameron Mitchell's other movies and yet emotionally consistent with them.
