Synopsis

The fourth collaboration between writer-director Nicole Holofcener and star Catherine Keener is the best yet. Please Give is a likeable dramedy set in New York City, where Kate (Keener), a lefty upper-middle bohemian, runs a mid-century antique store with her husband, Alex (Oliver Platt). The title refers to her guilt complex and why she's always giving money to the homeless. Kate and Alex are less charitable with the grieving relatives of the recently deceased, from which they basically steal new-old stock for their store. They have similar plans for the old crone adjacent to their apartment. But first, Kate and Alex need to sidle up to the woman's grown, single and insecure daughters (Rebecca Hall and Amanda Peet). "The movie is about imperfect characters in a difficult world, who mostly do the best they can under the circumstances, but not always...a revolutionary approach" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times).
