Synopsis

This sexy, violent and arty thriller about international assassins stars George Clooney as "the American," a stoical, salt-n-pepper killer with more aliases than back-story. He gets called out of quasi-retirement to sneak into Italy to craft a special weapon for a fellow hit-woman (Thekla Reuten). While not meticulously working on her gun, he's dating, bedding and spilling his "I want out for good" beans to a call girl (Violante Placido). But word gets out, and soon he's on the receiving end of pointed guns. As you'd expect from photographer-director Anton Corbijn (Control), there is not one unsightly shot in this picturesque picture. Based on Martin Booth's novel A Very Private Gentleman.

Very mannered, very European, very arcane,. very cold and in the end, very empty. Also, I've never seen George Clooney so lacking in charm. I can't imagine he enjoyed working on this movie. I feel like the only people who had a good time were the cameraman and whoever was charged with finding all those gorgeous locations. And of course I'm sure everyone ate very well during the course of production. I should add that I know the Europeans have made many great films, this just doesn't happen to be one of them.

Very slow - no dialogue. Convoluted plot. Also this recording kept skipping back to beginning - most frustrating. I expected more from George Clooney. Why did he choose this role?
