Synopsis

Word-of-mouth has elevated this "Japanese haunted-house freakout" (N.Y. Times) to absurd heights. Luckily, the hype is warranted. At the center of Hausu is a pretty teenage girl (Kimiko Ikegami) who travels over the rainbow with six friends to a secluded house inhabited by her wheelchair-bound aunt and a peculiar cat. Oh, and the house is possessed by a libidinous witch, who uses the dwelling to literally consume virgins. So what is our heroine's solution? Have sex. "Cult director Obi Obayashi takes the standard Italian atmospheric thriller one step further by creating a tale of a living haunted house" (Japanese Cinema Encyclopedia). In Japanese with English subtitles.

Nobuhiko Obayashi---Japan---1977---88 mins.

It was good but no masterpiece. To me it seemed like a teenager's flick - maybe ahead of its time, but just an ok movie.

I liked this movie. Very colorful. The violence of the house "eating" the young girls was creative and fun, not gory. Pretty good ending too.
