Synopsis

This devastating debut by artist-turned-filmmaker Steve McQueen dramatizes the last months in the life of Bobby Sands, an IRA member whose arrest, imprisonment, and hunger strike made headlines in 1981. Before his arrival at Northern Ireland's Maze prison, Hunger presents a still-free Sands (Michael Fassbender), passionately espousing his politics to a priest (Liam Cunningham) in one extremely long take. Once convicted, Sands declares himself a political prisoner, and his withering away, descent into dementia, and martyrdom are rendered in painstaking detail. Winner of the Camera D'Or at Cannes, the Discovery Award at the Toronto Film Festival, the Gucci Prize at Venice, and countless other awards. Featuring Stuart Graham.

Cannes winner depicting the 1980's IRA prison hunger-strike led by Bobby Sands. Shows the brutal treatment by the prison authorities and the forms of protest undertaken to press for special "political prisoner" status. A riveting debate between Bobby Sands and a priest who opposes Sands' decision for serial hunger strikes, plus a vivid portrayal of Sands' wasting away to death. Filmed with an artist's eye, visually stunning.
