Synopsis

Fantasy, personal documentary, and silent film stylization combine in Guy Maddin's ode to his snowy hometown. The idiosyncratic filmmaker presents supposed facts about the city's history and splices those with fragments of memories into what feels like an extended, episodic dream sequence. Ann Savage, in her final role, is wonderful as Maddin's mother. "...engaged less in historical inquiry than in hallucinatory autobiography, ruminating on the deep and accidental relationship between a specific place and an individual life" (The New York Times). Winner of Best Canadian Feature Film at the Toronto Film Festival.

Guy Maddin---Canada---2007---80 mins.

A love letter to Winnipeg, a city that Places Rated Almanac says would be "one of North America's great cities if it weren't for the climate." However it is the climate that makes Winnipeg unique, and native son Maddin exploits climate to the hilt. I experienced 13 winters in Winnipeg, and Maddin's cityscapes of great snowbanks walling in streets and dimly lit frozen back alleys made me feel homesick. If I could have obtained a passport the next day I would have hopped on a plane and flown to the Forks of the Red and Assiniboine! If you have never been to Winnipeg snuggle up with a hot drink before a roaring fire and savor the flavor.
