Synopsis

In Olivier Assayas' critically acclaimed family drama, three siblings (Juliette Binoche, Charles Berling and Jeremie Renier) inherit their late mother's (Edith Scob) beautiful country estate and must decide what to do with a lifetime of objects and memories. "...almost Ozu-like in its evocation of a parent's death and the dissolving bond between the surviving children. It's also an essay on the nature of sentimental and real value--as well as the need to protect French culture in a homogenizing world" (J. Hoberman, Village Voice). With subtle, admirable cinematography by Eric Gautier (A Christmas Tale). In French with English subtitles.

Olivier Assayas---France---2008---99 mins.

Slick surface, beautiful people and scenery, but trivial and superficial. Some critics have seen profundity in this movie; I see banality.

After the high-energy intensity of CARLOS, this Assayas film seems a bit lazy. Charming, yes, reminiscent of my own family gatherings, and interesting because of the participation of the Orsay Museum, but I kept waiting for a revelation.
