Synopsis

Carey Mulligan (Pride & Prejudice) delivers a star-making performance in this adaptation of Lynn Barber's memoir about coming-of-age in 1960s suburban London. Mulligan's 16-year-old Jenny is mannered, smart and Oxford-bound, but is also constantly tantalized by the sophisticated pleasures that await her outside her cloistered school and conservative home life. That is, until a playboy (Peter Sarsgaard) who's twice her age walks into her life and accelerates her education. "Lone Scherfig's emotionally pulsing, culturally observant picture simply bursts with life" (Variety). Screenplay by Nick Hornby. Winner of an Audience Award at Sundance.

The plot of 'An Education' is nothing you have not read or seen before. A young introverted teenager meets a charmer who takes her places and shows her parts of the city her sheltered parents never will. Which is to say she is headed for trouble. Carey Mulligan plays the introverted girl who feels pressure to excel in school. Peter Sarsgaard plays the charmer. What makes this movie worth seeing is the performances by both Mulligan and Sarsgaard and the dialogue. You feel empathy and connect with both of them. You see the growth of Mulligan's character, but also the change in her parents when they themselves fall for Sargaard's charm. If that's not enough, Emma Thompson plays a small but important role as the headmistress of Mulligan's school, who has seen and heard all of this before, and isn't shy about telling you how she feels about the situation.
