Synopsis

It's nice to know that a motion picture can still spark controversy in 2009 for reasons other than Mel Gibson's involvement. In Lars von Trier's "horror film," Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg play parents of a boy who falls to his death from their apartment. They retreat to a wooded cabin to overcome the loss, only to become possessed by the forest and [gruesome content censored by catalog editor]. Just make sure to put down the popcorn for this one. Winner of the Prix du Making People Pissed at Cannes. "Might have impressed even Hieronymus Bosch" (Variety).

Forget about the controversy surrounding Lars von Trier and comments he has made in the past. Judge the movie for what it is - von Trier's self proclaimed attempt at a horror movie. Yes, it is horrific, but not in a traditional sense. No monsters, but plenty of gore. A married couple loses a child in a tragic accident. The husband, a psychologist, takes on his wife as a patient - Mistake #1. They then decide to retreat to the country to confront her fear of Nature (notice the capital N) - Mistake #2. Everything goes downhill quickly. Man versus Nature, Woman versus man, Nature versus Nature. Chaos reigns (a line delivered from an unexpected source). Not for the faint of heart - the self mutilation scenes are graphic. Who or what is the antichrist? Don't expect a demonic child, but do expect to reconsider the next time you decide to go camping.
