Synopsis

Danny Boyle directs this vivid, zippy, and loud fairy-tale romance set in Mumbai. Told in flashback after being accused of cheating on India’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Jamal, a teenage “slumdog,” explains how he came to dominate the game show. Orphaned along with his brother, Salim, and surrogate sister, Latika, the narrative unfolds as the children struggle to survive. Jamal falls in love with Latika, Salim falls into a life of crime, and they are torn apart. Years later, destiny intercedes when Jamal is invited to be on Latika’s favorite show. Though based on an Indian novel by Vikas Swarup, employing a largely Indian cast and crew, and featuring an original score by A.R. Rahman, Slumdog was protested in India over its ostensibly pejorative title. But if the movie acts as a gateway to real Bollywood films for Western viewers, then it deserves each of the eight Oscars it received. Starring Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, Madhur Mittal, Anil Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla, Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, and Ayush Mahesh Khedekar. In English and Hindi with English subtitles.

In Slumdog Millionaire, Danny Boyle took a lot of things that I usually hate in films, and wove them together to make something quite wonderful. Somehow, the cliche life lessons that beat you over the head seem more welcome from a cast of such likable characters. The flashback style isn't an easy way out of effective storytelling, as it so often is-- it is actually suited to the film. The fact that the entire plot is centered around 'fate' may alienate some potential viewers, but if you can get passed that, Slumdog is a delightful adventure into India, and a rags to riches fantasy we would all like to believe is possible.
