Since I'm finally seeing the musical version of this in London next month, thought I better give this alleged classic a whirl. I'm only familiar with the parody from The Carol Burnett Show, "Rebecky." Joan Fontaine is a winsome young lady who gets caught up in a whirlwind romance with Maxim de Winter (Laurence Olivier) and when he whisks her off to his massive estate, the specter of his dead wife Rebecca is everywhere. Beautifully filmed, languidly paced, expertly overacted. Hardly any scenery was left unchewed. When the sordid truths are revealed the entire mansion goes up in flames in what has to be the first "Oh okay let's just end it with something stupid" in movie history. Too much was left unsaid and unexplained. Like, why was Mrs. Danvers the housekeeper so obsessed with Rebecca in the first place? There was too much "telling," not enough "showing." Oh well, at least the musical will have songs. And believe it or not, this is the first time I've seen Olivier in something as a younger actor. C
