Synopsis

In this deadpan spoof of 1960s spy movies, Jean Dujardin plays special agent OSS 117, a dim, hugely arrogant French version of James Bond. When forced to leave the ladies in Rome to solve a colleague's murder in Egypt, 117 falls ass backwards into clues and stumbles blindly into every problem facing the Middle East during the film's mid-1950s setting, including the Suez Crisis. "The film makes joyous nonsense out of bad matte paintings, obvious miniature effects, unsubtle sexual innuendo, and a lead actor who plays the role to clueless, arched-eyebrow perfection" (Scott Foundas, The Village Voice). In French with English subtitles.

I probably missed a lot because my French isn't all that good any more, although I did appreciate what was funny about the running gag concerning Rene Coty, not one of France's most illustrious presidents. Also, believe it or not, I have never seen a James Bond movie, so I didn't pick up on any references to those pictures. Still, miles ahead of the gross out Austin Powers flicks, but not as sly as Get Smart. And, as the previous reviewer noted, the sets are good and the actors aren't bad. All in all, not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

Good actors, stylish sets and locations, you want to like it - it just isn't funny enough.
