Synopsis

More Claire's Knee than anything in Woody Allen's oeuvre, Vicky Cristina Barcelona is a breezy, sexy art movie that stands out among the writer-director's recent work. On a summer holiday in Barcelona, Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) meet a suave local artist (Javier Bardem) who offers to whisk them away for a holiday-within-a-holiday. Though the girls know he has designs on them and that he was recently divorced, they don't anticipate his ex-wife (Penelope Cruz) will play a role in the kinky proceedings. A Golden Globe winner for Best Comedy Motion Picture.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona is a film stunted by its own composition, and could have been quite extraordinary were it tweaked in a few places. The anonymous voice-over narration that was present throughout the duration of the film was a mark of laziness, not artistic decision. With such fine actors and actresses, an unknown being saying out loud what each character was thinking was tedious and a bit ridiculous. Woody Allen should have put more faith in his actors to tell the entire story. Scarlett Johansson, who is often unbearable, was made for the role of Cristina. Allen likely knows her better than she knows herself, and cast her in a part where she didn't need to act at all. She calls herself a free-spirit but is reigned in by her insecurities, and she satisfies her desperate need for attention by pretending she hasn't a care about anyone or anything. It is astonishing to watch her. Rebecca Hall is also perfect as Vicky, and Penelope Cruz can do no wrong.
