Synopsis

The lurid lifestyles of the very rich and famous are the subject of this fifties box office champ from director Douglas Sirk. Robert Stack is the irresponsible son of an oil magnate. Lauren Bacall is his suffering wife. Rock Hudson plays his best friend and Dorothy Malone won an Oscar for her role as the nymphomaniac sister. Incredible saturated color. Before the famous still color photographers like Eggleston. I had to stop and just look at the very full and carefully designed frames. So many mirror shots. And the red anthuriums! The story is preposterously presented but that's because it is operatic. (Maybe would have been better with music, like Umbrellas of Cherbourg.). Ending too happy as well for opera, but that's what it is. It could have been even more tragic. Otherwise a classic color noir film not to miss.
