Synopsis

French film icons Alain Delon and Catherine Deneuve star in the final film by the great Jean-Pierre Melville (Le Samourai, Bob le Flambeur). Melville again finds thematic richness in the gangster genre with this tale o f a morose detective (Delon), a brilliant thief (Richard Crenna), and the woman they both love (Deneuve). "A bitter meditation on disenchantment and defeat, as glacial and hermetic as Deneuve's face" (Chris Peachment, Time Out) . In French with English subtitles. Jean-Pierre Melville---France---1972---98 mins.

Here is a tough, nuanced crime flick from a director whose empathy for his characters, balance of glaciality and bracing action, and uncompromising austerity was unique (though in the years since, often imitated: I think this is the first homework assignment at Michael Mann Film School). There could be no better actors for Melville's brutally beautiful but laconic vision than Alain Delon and Cahterine Deneuve. It's no surprise that he's a cop and she's the acute end of a love triangle. More so is the casting of and performance by Richard Crenna as a criminal mastermind and suave nightclub owner who constitutes the third wheel. American audiences might also recognize Michael Conrad from Hill Street Blues doing admirable work here.
