Synopsis

Director Catherine Hardwicke co-wrote with then 13-year-old Nikki Reed (who also co-stars) this semi-autobiographical portrait of teenage rebellion about a young girl who falls into the world of drugs, petty crime and anonymous sex. Evan Rachel Wood delivers a fine performance as the impressionable, overachieving teen who risks everything in order to impress a new friend (Reed) who lives life on the edge. Holly Hunter (The Piano) is equally exceptional as the girl's distraught and concerned mother. Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, with Hardwicke taking Catherine Hardwicke---USA---2003---100 mins.

I saw this movie when it first came out and liked it. I was curious if it held up over time. It did. A remarkable piece of realism, thanks in large part to the wonderful performances. I always wonder how young actors can play themselves convincingly, especially when their characters are as troubled as these kids. And Holly Hunter, as the overwhelmed mom is superb as well. I probably should have rated it a 5...I suppose I didn't because I wasn't really moved until the end (which was magnificent).
