Synopsis

A small Vermont town is turned upside-down when a Hollywood movie crew moves in for a new production in David Mamet's ensemble comedy of manners and morals. Philip Seymour Hoffman is the screenwriter struggling with last-minute story changes, Rebecca Pidgeon is the local bookstore owner he falls for, William H. Macy is the highly driven director, Sarah Jessica Parker is the actress wary of undressing for the camera, and Alec Baldwin is the popular leading man with a penchant for very young girls. The all-star cast also includes Patti LuPone, Charles Durning, Julia Stiles, and David Paymer. David Mamet---USA---2000---106 mins.

An amiable movie. No, there is no fast-paced plot, and there are other comedies about movie-making that are funnier, but this one has charm. Philip S. Hoffman is a tad too serious, but William H. Macy, David Paymer and Sarah Jessica Parker are laugh-out-loud funny. Glad I took the time to see this one.

Hardly what you might expect from David Mamet. No rapid-fire dialogue, no sinister plot twists and barely any malevolence. Instead, a rather silly example of romantic-comedy fluff. The romantic leads do have a modicum of endearing charm that almost compensates for the ridiculousness of the whole thing. But the humor is paper thin, barely eliciting a smile or an inaudible chuckle. Watch it only if you have absolutely nothing better to do.
