Synopsis

While not as immediately striking as Andrei Tarkovsky's hypnotic 1972 version, Steven Soderbergh''s adaptation of Stanislaw Lem''s short story is nevertheless a beautiful outing from the director. George Clooney is cast as the widower psychologist sent into deep space to investigate the unusual occurrences on a space station orbiting the planet Solaris. While there, his sanity is called into question when he is confronted by the apparition of his dead wife (Natascha McElhone). "Elegant, moody, intelligent, (and) sensuous" (J. Hoberman, Village Voice). Steven Soderbergh---USA---2002---99 mins.

Sorry, not my cup of tea. I can't say that about all sci-fi but this one struck me as nonsense. Pseudo- philosophical nonsense with no real characters or drama. Not even melodrama. Just mush and confusion. I've never seen the earlier Tarkovsky version which is supposed to be excellent. Maybe it's better than this one but I doubt it's so much better that I'd want to waste my time with it.
