Astounding movie! First saw in 1948 in our small town Massachusetts movie theater: how Red Shoes got booked there was a mystery since the proprietor's idea of high culture was an MGM musical. Anyway, the film created a sensation. It was weird, mushy, melodramatic, morbid and slightly decadent, not to mention being British in a town that was still fighting the American Revolution. Nonetheless, people across all strata of society - even jaded teen aged boys like me - flocked to see it. Gorgeous technicolor, fine script, good performances by pros and amateurs alike, great cinematography and amazing special effects. Impresses me still.
