Synopsis

Set in Glasgow at the time of a national garbage strike in Scotland during the mid-70s, Lynne Ramsay's debut feature is raw and realistic, yet also deeply expressive in its portrait of childhood burdens. The story follows an adolescent boy, growing up in poverty, haunted by a recent tragedy, and confronted each new day by his bleak, decaying surroundings. "As spare and unflinching as Alan Clarke''s Christine, and as poetic as Jean Vigo''s Zero de Conduit, Ratcatcher is a film in which viewers still close to the experience of childhood will be able to recognize themselves. It''s also the most audacious debut feature of the year" (Amy Taubin, Village Lynne Ramsay---Great Britain---1999---94 mins.
