Synopsis

Nothing in recent cinema comes close to Hector Babenco's devastating account of brutalization and exploitation offered in this film about a 12-year-old boy who somehow survives the vicious oppression of reform school to escape and find his way into dope-dealing, prostitution and murder on the streets of Sao Paolo, Brazil. Named one of the top ten films of the year by the National Society of Film Critics, the National Board of Review, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Village Voice. Portugue se Hector Babenco---Brazil---1981---127 mins.

The life of a boy named Pixote (Fernando Ramos da Silva) on the streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil, who gets involved with various petty crimes...until ain't so petty no more. Bleak, hard to watch look at these forgotten children who are seemingly discarded by society. I believe this one piqued my interest because of its inclusion on a list of "difficult to watch" movies, or something like that. And it definitely is. Pixote has a hard life and does some pretty terrible things that his innocent baby face belies. The movie begins with Pixote being taken into a reform school with a group of other boys, follows his integration into the cruel life there, and further watches as he and a group of other boys escape to Rio where they get involved in drugs and become the collective pimp to a down-on-her-luck streetwalker who may or may not have a heart of gold. Don't put this one after Thanksgiving lunch, folks. Very grim. And when you learn the history of the boy who played Pixote, it seems even more so. Well done slice of life look at a forgotten and abused population. But I'll never, ever watch it again.
