Synopsis

The aftermath of the Spanish Civil War acts as a backdrop to Guillermo del Toro's horror-fantasy tale about an imaginative girl, Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), who travels with her sickly mother (Ariadna Gil) to live with her sadistic stepfather (Sergi Lopez) at his military outpost. There, she discovers a labyrinth in the surrounding forest and meets a fawn (Doug Jones), who leads her into a magical world of fairies, giant toads, and eyeless child-eating ghouls. Though Pan''s Labyrinth transformed del Toro from a well-versed genre-film director (Cronos, Hellboy) into a full-fledged art-house sensation, it still carries his indelible mark: a child protagonis t, subterranean worlds, clock imagery, horrific monsters, and an unabashed enthusiasm for the fantastic and mythology. Nominated for six Academy Awards , including Best Foreign Language Film, Original Screenplay (del Toro), Art Direction, Cinematography (Guillermo Navarro), Makeup, and Score (Javier Guillermo del Toro---Mexico/Spain/USA---2006---119 mins.
