Synopsis

A true classic. Robert Mitchum gives one of his best performances as Harry Powell, a psychotic self-styled preacher who is after the stolen money of a hanged man. Set in a small West Virginia community during the Depression, this was Charles Laughton's only screen credit as a director. With magnificently expressive sets and one of the most extreme and effective examples of film noir lighting, he made the most of the opportunity. Shelley Winters, Lillian Gish and Peter Graves also star. James Agee adapted David Grubb''s novel for Charles Laughton---USA---1955---93 mins.

This film confronts a lot of issues head on such as misogyny, sexual relations between a husband and wife, promises, the depression, being an orphan, capital punishment. Most films dance around these issues and it is beautifully done on top of that!

Eerie, almost poetic yet disturbingly realistic depiction of evil. Half a century ago, when I lived in Australia, I was told that Australian Customs banned the film, but not the book. New Zealand supposedly did just the opposite. Autres pays, autres moeurs?
