Synopsis

Ray's Chekhovian story of Bishamber Rai, an aging, proud, Indian nobleman who undergoes a slow decline after he, to spite his ambitious businessman neighbor, decides to present a lavish musical fete. "The hero is great because he destroys himself; he is also mad...worrying over its faults as a film is like worrying over whether King Lear is well constructed; it really doesn''t matter" (Pauline Kael). With Chabi Biswas, Ganga Pada Basu, Kali Sarkhar and Padma Devi. Fully restored. Bengali with English subtitles. Satyajit Ray---India---1958---100 mins.

I was living in Hong Kong when The music room came out. Critics weren't too favorable, saying that it was overlong and one dimensional, not up to Ray's usual standard. It took me 30 years to acquire a copy, a not very good VHS. I was captivated. I've seen it at least 20 times, and never grow tired of it. One could say that it is a parable that's just as applicable to our age as it was to that of post independence Bengal, the shoving aside of cultured elegance by vulgar pushiness.
