Synopsis

Viewed as a disaster when first released and taken by many as an unintentional camp comedy, this film has lately been defended in some critical quarters. A tell-all biography of the legendary star Joan Crawford, based upon the best-selling book by her adopted daughter Christina Crawford, it features a memorable performance by Faye Dunaway as Joan--struggling against her inner demons, a demanding, cruel and abusive mother descending into alcoholism. "...arguably too good to qualify as camp, even if it begins (and fitfully proceeds) like a horror film. Director Frank Perry...gives it all a certain crazed conviction" (Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader). Frank Perry---USA---1981---129 mins.

Consistently acted, a story of neurotic motherhood. The disturbing question came up for me: how do we know when people are ''acting"? In the film, this is achieved by having the camera rest on a frozen expression or by a touch of over-acting, but obviously in real life an actor who can do that, can also refrain from doing that.
