Synopsis

The directorial debut of Tony Gilroy, screenwriter of the Bourne trilogy, stars George Clooney in the title role. Clayton is a fixer working for a powerful New York law firm, which is defending a big corporation that's clearly guilty of poisoning people. When the lead counsel (Tom Wilkinson) goes missing, taking the smoking gun with him, the legal and corporate higher-ups (Sydney Pollack and Tilda Swinton) look to Clayton to "resolve" the matter. Though its plot points and surreal starkness are similar to another fine legal thriller, The Insider, Michael Clayton "is just about perfect as an exercise in the genre" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). With Sydn ey Pollack and Tilda Swinton. Cinematography by Robert Elswit (Magnolia ). Nominated for four Golden Globes. Tony Gilroy---USA---2007---119 mins.

I almost hate to add a third review, following a one-star review and a five-star review. I'm giving it four stars, but it's very close to being a five-star movie now in 2017. With time it may come to be seen as being very prescient about the way the world is moving--indeed, I was prompted to watch it again based on an article I read somewhere that made that argument. So, it's definitely on the money. I suppose its blandness is intentional and may make it more effective overall. But, I'm still a bit reluctant to give it five stars.

I hope that George Clooney knew what was going on in Michael Clayton because I only had the vaguest idea. Back flashes, fore flashes, speech preparation mixed in with actual deliveries, irrelevant subplot, rapid scene changes all make for a confusing movie. Millions of dollars could have been saved by having someone say at the beginning, "Big corporations suck". Clooney must love this sort of stuff. I couldn't make head nor tail of Syriana or his remakeof Big deal on Madonna Street either. I guess I'm too old for the fast pace of modern life.

Phenomenal. So much better than I had expected. I really had not given this movie much thought before a good friend said it was fantastic. Indeed it was.
