Synopsis

Following The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Steve Carell proved himself capable of much more than Frat Pack-style yuks in this breakout dramedy. He's cast as the world''s second most important Proust scholar who, after attempting suicide, is roped into a cross-country trek with his sister''s dysfunctional family to get his adorable niece to the Little Miss Sunshine Pageant. Smart dialogue, dynamic characters, and tearfully funny moments combine in this sometimes cute, oftentimes melancholy road movie that hits right where National Lampoon''s Vacation and American Beauty should meet. Costarring Toni Collette, Abigail Breslin, Alan Arkin, Paul Dano, and Greg Kinnear. Jonathan Dayton/Valerie Faris---USA---2006---101 mins.

Sort of an evil twin of those Disney family comedies of yesteryear. Overall, the cast is excellent, but the movie goes after too many targets: besides beauty pageants barbs are aimed at motivational speakers, self pitying academics, dishonest book agents, pretentious mechanics and maybe some others that I missed. And when it had a real opportunity to expose beauty pageants for what they are, pure sleaze, it blew it with ham fisted satire. And the songs! Is that what music has come to? Oh for the days when W. C. Fields headed west with his family.

Wow. Absolutely charming with just enough darkness and edge to keep it from plummeting into adjectival phrases like "poignant film." Plenty of tension, much of it emanating from Greg Kinnear's performance as a failed motivational guy who rubs every member of his family the wrong way--incredible cast includes Toni Collette, Alan Arkin, Steve Carel (playing against type), and Abigail Breslin.
