Synopsis

A masterpiece of suspense and sexual repression, largely due to the muted tension between Bette Davis and James Stephenson. When a woman is accused of murder, her husband and lawyer try to get her off on a self-defense plea, but was it really? Based on the novel by W. Somerset Maugham. Excellent film noir. William Wyler---USA---1940---95 mins.

Much slicker and less stagy than the 1929 version, but, and it pains me to say this, Jeanne Eagels ran circles around Bette Davis. Sondergaard, as the Asian mistress, is positively embarrassing: couldn't they have found a an Asian actress to play the part. They did in 1929. The earlier version was also franker, more atmospheric.
