Synopsis

Called "one of the great films of the past decade" (Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune), Gianni Amelio's elaborate fresco-of-a-film is set in Albania. Fiore, an unscrupulous Italian businessman, arrives to grab the spoils of the post-Communist turmoil. He appoints a half-crazy old Albanian man as his patsy to serve as chairman of his fraudulent company. When this puppet slips away from his manipulators, Fiore''s cocky assistant Gino is dispatched to track him down. The film takes the form of an odyssey that is also a moral awakening. With Enrico Lo Verso, Michele Placido and Carmelo Di Mazzarelli. In Italian with English subtitles. Gianni Amelio---Italy---1995---120 mins.

Gianni Amelio is one of the greatest directors working in Italy today. He is much influenced by Italian Neorealism in interesting ways, such as his use of non-actors, including real Albanian government officials, in this film. The analogies between America's relation to Italy and Italy's relation to Albania are stark and disturbing. The film is also beautiful and moving.
