Synopsis

Confrontational in every regard, I Stand Alone is a shocking portrait of hatred and the disturbed mind that gives it free reign. An unemployed, 50-year-old butcher finds rage as the only fuel for his existence. His angry, racist, misogynist, homophobic, and class-conscious thoughts are shared in an expletive-laced voice-over narration that runs through most of the film as his pitiful life unravels. His destructive behavior escalates to a terrible act of violence and depraved sexual fantasies about his mute teenaged daughter. "...a bit like watching Taxi Driver written by Dostoyevsky and starring Charles Bukowski at his most rancidly disgusted...The movie blisters with the scalding poignance of a man trying--and failing--to surgically remove his own heart" (Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly). In French with English Gaspar Noe---France---1999---93 mins.
