Synopsis

The Cuban revolution is at the center of Mikhail Kalatazov's strange, poetic film from 1964 that unites four stories. Originally controversial because of a uniquely Russian view of Cuba, it was not widely seen. In the years since its initial release, the film, which features a poem by Yevgeni Yevtushenko, has achieved international critical acclaim. "One of the most deliriously beautiful films ever made" (Manohla Dargis, LA Weekly). In Spanish and Russian with English subtitles. Mikhail Kalatozov---Cuba/USSR---1964---141 mins.

This film is the best and most inspiring that I have seen in a long time, if not ever. Being a Russian Cuban collaboration filmed in the early 1960s about the Cuban revolution, one has to recognize the unique environment that allowed this film to exist at all. If you don't happen to be a communist sympathizer, you should still see "soy Cuba" for its cinematography. However, I believe that to truly experience this film you have to go in with an open mind and an open heart, allowing the poetry and the overall message to seep into your bones. The documentary film "The Siberian Mammoth" is about this film's unique history (30 year shelving and rediscovery) and is a must see accompaniment to this classic.
