Synopsis

David Mamet's acclaimed first feature film, starring Lindsay Crouse as a famed psychiatrist/author whose work draws her into the dangerous but provocative world of a smooth-talking con man (Joe Mantegna), from which there is no escape. Mamet''s flair for streetwise yet poetic dialogue is very much in evidence in this memorable drama of tricks that always outdo the truth. David Mamet---USA---1987---102 mins.

There is much to commend about this film. After a rather slow beginning it moves quickly. Viewers have to stay alert to keep up with the twists and turns of the plot. On one level it might be called "A beginner's guide to con artistry", but there is more. Moral issues are raised, but Mamet doesn't preach. He let's the psychoanalist get away with murder. As the other reviewer said scenes are well thought out, lighting is evocative. Direction is crisp. However, there is an air of artificiality. The flat, precise, perfectly enunciated speech got on my nerves after a while. An interesting movie, but I wouldn't want to see it again, nor would I recommend it to friends.

As a directorial debut it is stunning, reminding me of A Single Man, the way Mamet put infinite care into each scene, each shot, each frame. The composition and color choices are elegant, the pacing exciting, the poker game believable. The theme of there being both larceny and self-deception in the heart of everyone is engaging. Can a con artist underestimate his mark? Always an intriguing question.
